Comoros Islands

Comoros is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean between between northeastern Mozambique and northwestern Madagascar. The country officially consists of four islands, but the major airport is in the city of Moroni on the Grande Comore island.  From southern Kenya, it required a 2-hour over water flight to reach the volcanic island.  

The highest point on Grande Comore is Mount Karthala, which is 7,746 feet above sea level.  Mount Karthala is an active volcano that last erupted in May 2006.  The climate is tropical and the terrain is rugged with rocky soil due to lava flows. 

Comoros is a poor country which relies on fishing, hunting and forestry. As of 2008, about half the population lives below the international poverty line of US $1.25 a day.  Although small in size, it is densely populated and the dominant religion is Sunni Muslim, representing about 98% of the population.  As you can see, the island is scenic.

The trip home took us back through Kenya, where we encountered the crew from our second aircraft.  Our travels require a lot of logistical support.  In southern Kenya, we coordinate with a a local who is also a survivor of the 1998 U.S. Embassy Bombings
